Great news for fans of the big screen adaptation of Sherlock Holmes which stars Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes and Jude Law as Dr. Watson (me included) … a release date has been announced for the sequel to last December’s film. According to a new report, Sherlock Holmes 2 will hit theaters just before Xmas 2011:
Warner Bros has announced a December 16th 2011 release date for the Guy Ritchie-directed sequel Sherlock Holmes 2, starring Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law. The film will be going head to head with the Brad Bird-directed Mission: Impossible IV, one week after Martin Scorsese’s 3D movie The Invention of Hugo Cabret , and one week before Steven Spielberg’s 3D performance capture adaptation of The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn and Cameron Crowe’s adaptation of We Bought A Zoo. Also, Producer Joel Silver confirmed to Sci-Fi Wire that Rachel McAdams will return for the sequel, stating that “she’ll be present”. But I wouldn’t expect her to have a large role as the actress is tentatively scheduled to begin filming on Terrence Malick’s untitled next film in the fall. Silver also confirms that the next film will pay off and revolve around Sherlock’s archnemesis Moriarty. Brad Pitt had previously rumored to be in line for the role.
I so thoroughly enjoyed Sherlock Holmes that I am very much looking forward to this upcoming sequel. I know some folks have mixed feelings about Brad Pitt playing Holmes’s arch-nemesis Moriarty but I think he’ll do a great job … IF he gets the role. I have to admit, I have not been a huge fan of Guy Ritchie’s films (save for Lock, Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels … that was a great film) but he really impressed me with Sherlock Holmes. Will he continue to impress with SH 2? I guess we’ll have to wait until December 16, 2011 to find out.
