Visionary film director Guillermo del Toro has teamed up with The Jim Henson Company to begin work on a new live action film adaptation of the classic story of Pinocchio. Based on the picture book authored by Carlo Collodi and illustrated by Gris Grimly, del Toro‘s vision of Pinocchio looks to put a dark spin on the classic tale … which, if you’re a fan of del Toro‘s amazing films, should come as no surprise at all. Click below to check out a photo of what Guillermo del Toro‘s Pinocchio will look like in this new film.

Produced by The Jim Henson Company and Guillermo Del Toro, the next movie version of Pinocchio has some serious geek credentials right out of the gate. I also expect that it will make something of a fan hero out of its director, Gris Grimly, building on the love already earnt with his wonderful books. One of those books, published in 2002, was an illustrated version of Carlo Collodi’s Pinocchio. Some years later, and Grimly’s film is getting ready to speed into full-on production. There’s no casting news, yet, but we do at least know that the puppets are going to be splendidly well built. Grimly has tweeted that MacKinnon and Saunders, the world’s premiere stop-motion doll fabricators, are doing the builds of his characters. He also went on to provide our first image of his Pinocchio in the flesh wood. While this isn’t an actual puppet that will be animated in the film, it is built to the same model but as a non-articulated maquette, providing something the producers can show potential distributors.

Wow! This is going to RULE ALL!! I am a HUGE del Toro fan (my fave film being Pan’s Labyrinth) and I know he will do an excellent job bringing Pinocchio to life in this new film. I understand that Nick Cave is overseeing the music that will accompany this film … which only makes this news all the more kickass. I love this first look at Pinocchio … this is one film that I will deffo be on the look-out for.
