Wowza! Where's the loyalty…on both sides?!
Sources connected with the show say the Regis Philbin decision to walk away from his longtime morning show is not because he is ready for a change - its because they tried to cut his salary!
Jim Griffin, Regis' agent, reportedly was in deep talks with ABC execs for awhile before Regis made his retirement announcement. His current deal was about to expire and the execs made it clear that times were tough, the show wasn't doing as well as it had in the past and Regis takes a lot of time off, so a pay cut was necessary.
Regis was furious as he felt he deserved to continue ranking in $18 and $20 million a year for the gig. But the network stayed firm on the matter, insisting the cut needed to happen. So, Regis took matters into his own hands.
And it hasn't been without consequences. Seems that not only did Kelly Ripa not know about the announcement until 15 minutes before, but the whole crew who's been with him for 28 years was blindsided as well. No word if the set has become a hostile work environment for him, but we do know Kelly was very angry with him and told one source, "She felt it showed a total lack of respect for her."
Hmm. Wonder if she'll still feel that way when there is all these extra millions of dollars lying around and she's up for a raise? One man's lose is another pair of new Jimmy Choo shoes!
