After flying out of Berlin, Germany early yesterday morning we managed to arrive in surprisingly warmish NYC, NY by mid afternoon. Since we were staying in town overnight we decided to see a Broadway show. David, Eden and I made our way to the heart of Times Square to see the new Broadway musical Priscilla Queen of the Desert at the Palace Theater … and I am happy to report that, altho still in previews, the 3 of us LOVED the show entirely.

If you can believe it, I haven’t actually seen the film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert even tho I’ve heard very good things about it. So going into the show last night, I wasn’t really aware of what the story would be. I understand the musical follows the storyline of the film very faithfully — but with the added Broadway music magic. The soundtrack, which is fabulous by the way, is made up mostly of pop cover songs (Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, etc.) but much like the 80′s music soundtrack to Rock of Ages works so well so, too, does the soundtrack for Priscilla. The 3 main lead actors — Will Swenson, Tony Sheldon and Nick Adams — are really, really fantastic … tho, if I had to rank them I’d say Tony, Nick and then Will. But, in all honesty, each player does a phenomenal job in this show. For me, the most exciting element was the costume design with the staging of the bus (Priscilla) coming in a close second. The show is just so creative, so eye-popping and so fun to watch that you really get lost in the spectacle. The show even has flying castmembers as well!! Because the show is based on an already successful movie (which first became a stage musical in Australia before moving to London then to Toronto), this Broadway show is kind of a sure thing. It’s just a really fun, really engaging story with great music and impressive costuming and staging. The audience gave the players a full house standing ovation that lasted for many, many minutes. I’m thinking Priscilla is going to do very well on Broadway. I loved this show very much and am so glad that I finally got to see The Queen of the Desert in action.
