Time is running out for the TV show Two and a Half Men because CBS has to decide very soon which shows will be greenlighted for the Fall TV season. Because Charlie Sheen melted down and went absolutely nuts, there is no way he will be allowed to return to the show. That said, Two and a Half Men showrunner Chuck Lorre (who Sheen has been feuding with for the past few months) has come up with a plan to reboot the show without Charlie Sheen. But, according to TMZ, the show has a 50/50 chance of not getting picked up at all. The end of the show may be very close.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that series co-creator Chuck Lorre has hatched an idea to reboot the Warner Bros-produced sitcom. With time running out before the CBS upfront presentation in May, the plan to relaunch Two and a Half Men without Charlie Sheen is beginning to take shape. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that series co-creator Chuck Lorre has hatched an idea to reboot the Warner Bros-produced sitcom with a new creative direction that does not involve Sheen, who was fired from the series in March. Lorre is said to have presented close associates and Men co-star Jon Cryer with the plan, and the studio and network are aware of his intentions. According to an insider, Lorre has told Cryer this re-boot would involve a significant role for him and the introduction of a new, yet-to-be-cast character … Neither CBS nor Warner Bros. has said whether Men will return for an ninth season. But industry speculation is that the show will almost certainly return. And talent representatives say that Warners has quietly begun pursuing an actor to appear in the series next season. Who that actor will be has become Topic A in Hollywood. Speculation has ranged from the plausible to the peculiar, with names from Woody Harrelson to Jeremy Piven to Bob Saget being bandied about. A Warners spokesperson says none of these actors is in contention. While a new castmember wouldn’t make “Sheen money”– in the $1.2 million realm, per episode–slipping into television’s No. 1 sitcom would earn an actor a rate well above the usual freshman series fee, says one observer. But the role would come with intense pressure, as blame could be placed on the newcomer if the revamped show flops. Others have suggested that Men might consider a “roommate” scenario, with multiple stars appearing on one or a few episodes to fill the Sheen void.

But, there is no such thing as a “sure thing” in Hollywood … despite this talk of a reboot, it’s very possible that the show might not get picked up at all:

There’s a 50/50 chance “Two and a Half Men” will not come back for a 9th season … There are certain things we know for sure …

– Charlie Sheen will NOT be coming back to the show
– Chuck Lorre has a plan for re-tooling the show, but no deals with replacement actors have been made. In fact, no offers have even been put on the table.
– A decision on the fate of “Men” will be made before May 18.

The Hollywood Reporter says Lorre is thinking of beefing up Jon Cryer’s role and bringing a new actor onboard to replace Sheen … One well-connected source tells TMZ, “There really is a good chance the show won’t come back.”

If I had to make a wager, my money would would be on the plan to reboot the show. Two and a Half Men makes WAY too much money for it just to get dumped. There will be so much attention placed on the show if it does comeback that there will be a real chance of huge success … especially without Sheen‘s insanity to muck up the waters. If they can get a real A-list actor to join the cast, the show will remain a hit. BUT … it has to get picked up for a 9th season so … we should know very soon if Two and a Half Men will live on to see another season.
