If the preliminary box office numbers are any indication, the badass looking Cowboys and Aliens might actually perform BELOW the studio's lowest expectations.
Some experts project that it's going to only bring in around $40 mil - when it was thought to make at least $100 million more! Sources explain:
Today's seeming $15M debut may add up to at most a $40M weekend which is below the studio's own lowball projections of $45+M. Problem is that the budget has been pegged by insiders at $163M-$200M. And then there are big stars Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford, the god-fathering presence of Steven Spielberg and Imagine's Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, and director Jon Favreau of Iron Man films fame.
In other movie news, Smurfs and Crazy Stupid Love look to be doing just about what they were thought to do:
Sony Pictures' Smurfs is looking like $10M today for $29M weekend which is respectable for its target audience of very young moviegoers. And Warner Bros' Crazy, Stupid, Love is looking like $6M today for probably a $18M first weekend.
Though, it's a shame that Smurfs isn't getting good reviews at all.
We ARE all about seeing Ryan Gosling in anything, though, and hope others want to as well!
