Back in March, we learned that the entire Star Wars movie film franchise will be rereleased in theaters in 3D … but long before that happens, SW fans will be offered the chance to own the just-announced Star Wars: The Complete Saga box set. This new offering will feature all 6 films spread over 9 discs that will include previously unseen footage. That’s right, George Lucas has been sitting on unreleased Star Wars footage that has never seen the light of day … and will ONLY be available on this new box set. Click below for some deets about the release and watch a video trailer for Star Wars: The Complete Saga.

Star Wars fans will soon be able to see snippets of the series long hidden away in the vaults of series creator George Lucas. The movie mogul is releasing a large amount of previously unavailable footage in a bid to tempt fans to buy the films all over again in high definition Blu-ray format. They make up perhaps the most exciting bonus material in the upcoming nine-disc Star Wars: The Complete Saga package. The new material will only be available to fans who can afford to fork out the $140 asking price for the box-set, which is released in September. It will be the third time in just over a decade the series has been given an overhaul and re-released. As well as the original cuts, a special edition with added footage was released in 1997, while in 2004 a special box set hit stores containing digitally enhanced new cuts of the original to bring them into line with the recently made prequels … it has been promised that the Complete Saga will be packed with remastered footage and lots of worthy extras. At the moment it is unclear whether the new scenes will make it into the upcoming 3D theater release, or if they will just include the original theatrical cuts.

Oh man … this looks cool. I am ALL for unreleased new footage. I’m sure that fans who already own the entire saga on DVD may be miffed that they have to buy a new box set but I don’t see a thing wrong with offering fans more. If you want it, buy it. If not, don’t. It’s that simple. Now may be the time for me to shell out for the entire saga. This sounds like a great idea to me.
