Mariah Carey, who is doing as much promo as she can for her new Xmas album Merry Christmas II You before she has to go into hiding to give birth to her first child, made an appearance at Rockefeller Center in NYC last night to film a performance for the upcoming NBC holiday special Christmas In Rockefeller Center which will air on November 30. In addition to live (well, taped) performances by Mimi, Sheryl Crow, Annie Lennox, KYLIE MINOGUE and more, the special will feature the lighting of the Xmas tree at Rockefeller Center. Here are photos from Mariah‘s performance last night and some press release deets about the NBC special which will air in a little over a week:
MARIAH CAREY, SHERYL CROW, JOSH GROBAN, JESSICA SIMPSON, SUSAN BOYLE, ANNIE LENNOX, KATHERINE JENKINS, CHARICE, KYLIE MINOGUE AND JACKIE EVANCHO (NBC’S “AMERICA’S GOT TALENT”) WILL JOIN THE CELEBRATION TO LIGHT UP THE WORLD’S MOST FAMOUS CHRISTMAS TREE FOR NBC’S 13TH ANNUAL “CHRISTMAS IN ROCKEFELLER CENTER” SPECIAL ON NOVEMBER 30 (8-9 P.M. ET/PT)
Natalie Morales (NBC’s “Today”) and Al Roker (NBC’s “Today”) To Co-Host the Live Holiday Special
New York – November 3, 2010 – NBC will celebrate the lighting of the world’s most famous Christmas tree once again with a live broadcast from Rockefeller Center in New York City on Tuesday, November 30 (8-9 p.m. ET/PT). The star-studded holiday special will feature performances by Susan Boyle, Mariah Carey, Charice, Sheryl Crow, Jackie Evancho, Josh Groban, Katherine Jenkins, Annie Lennox, Kylie Minogue, Jessica Simpson and The Radio City Rockettes with a mix of current hits and holiday classics.
The 78th annual holiday extravaganza will feature a tree that is 74 feet high, 40 feet in diameter and weighs a whopping 12 tons.
The tradition of the Rockefeller Christmas tree dates back to the Great Depression. First erected in 1933, the inaugural tree was decked with 700 lights and placed in front of the then eight-month-old RCA Building, now the GE Building. The Christmas tree gathering was enhanced in 1936 with the opening of the Rockefeller Plaza outdoor ice-skating pond. NBC-TV televised the tree lighting for the first time in 1951 on “The Kate Smith Show” and as part of the nationwide “Howdy Doody” television show from 1953-55.
I’m not normally a fan of these Xmas tree lighting specials but this year NBC managed to cull together a pretty impressive list of performers. Mariah Carey is a big draw, naturally, but the mere inclusion of the amazing Kylie Minogue means that I’ll be tuning in for sure. Much props go to Mariah for the clever way she decided to hide her baby bulk. While I would LOVE for her to put her baby bump on display, I can understand her need to be vain … especially when performing on national television. She looks fantastic, I can’t wait to see this performance when Christmas In Rockefeller Center airs on NBC on November 30.
