Hellz to the yes! WERK IT, boy!
Last year, the awesome minds behind the Archie comics introduced its first openly gay character to the series, named Kevin Keller, and to say that he's become quite popular with readers and the LGBT community alike is a pretty big understatement!
IN fact, feedback has been so positive that Kevin will be getting his own monthly comic book, starting next February!
Jon Goldwater, co-chief executive of Archie, says:
“He’s proven to be incredibly popular. We’re just so proud of the success of Kevin and the fact that he adds a new dynamic to Riverdale.”
The series will focus on Kevin's life in high school, as well as his relationship with his father, who serves in the military!
Creator Dan Parent explains:
“He’s going to be the class president. Even the most popular kids are not popular with everybody. There’s some adversity he’ll have to deal with.”
And if this isn't AMAZING enough news, the character will also be featured as an adult in the the alternative series Life With Archie, and will be apparently be married to another gent!
Goldwater explains:
“We needed to figure out how to get Kevin into that book and, frankly, not sidestep the issue. It deals with the fact that he’s a gay man and has gay relationships. Out of all the people who subscribe to the Archie books, we only had seven total cancellations.”
Such an unbelievable and inspiring testament to the changing viewpoints on homosexual issues in America! We're so proud that Kevin is written with so much respect and honesty, and that readers have had such a powerful reaction to his inclusion!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
We hope that many young and confused teens struggling with their own sexual identity will continue to look to him as a positive role model!
