In 1993 Tony Kushner‘s award winning play Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes opened on Broadway and set the theater world afire by winning the Tony Award for Best Play in 1993 and 1994 (because the play is performed in two parts, Part One: Millennium Approaches and Part Two: Perestroika — each part won the Best Play Tony in their respective years) and now 17 years later Angels In America is ready for its revival. Starring Zachary Quinto, Robin Bartlett, Christian Borle, Bill Heck, Zoe Kazan, Billy Porter, Robin Weigert and Frank Wood, Angels is being produced by the Signature Theatre Company and will open at the Peter Norton Space on October 28 (tho the show will go into previews on September 14). Due to overwhelming demand, the show has been extended for 6 more weeks with performances going into 2011. Here are a few photos of the Angels In America cast rehearsing the show and some deets about the performance extension:

Due to overwhelming demand, Signature Theatre Company (Founding Artistic Director James Houghton; Executive Director Erika Mallin) is pleased to announce a six-week extension for the first New York revival of Tony Kushner’s ANGELS IN AMERICA: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes, directed by Michael Greif. The production, originally slated to run through December 19, 2010, will now play through Sunday, January 30, 2011. ANGELS IN AMERICA, begins performances on September 14 and opens October 28 at the Peter Norton Space (555 West 42nd Street). Millennium Approaches and Perestroika, the two parts of ANGELS IN AMERICA, will begin alternating in repertory from the start of performances … Signature Theatre Company Artistic Director James Houghton says, “It is deeply gratifying to see the overwhelming response to Tony Kushner’s essential ANGELS IN AMERICA. We are thrilled that New York audiences are as excited about seeing this landmark work as Signature Theatre Company is about producing it.” ANGELS IN AMERICA features Robin Bartlett as Hannah Pitt, Christian Borle as Prior Walter, Bill Heck as Joe Pitt, Zoe Kazan as Harper Pitt, Billy Porter as Belize, Zachary Quinto as Louis Ironson, Robin Weigert as The Angel and Frank Wood as Roy Cohn.

I have never been fortunate enough to be able to see his play performed live. In college, I was approached to be a part of a production that was being put together by one of my favorite professors but I knew that I would not do well on the performance stage and opted out. I’ve read and LOVED the play for many years now. I am very excited that Angels In America will be performed again on the Broadway stage … I hadn’t planned on making my way to NYC in the coming months but I would deffo like to make my way to the Big Apple just to see this show performed live. Those of you who are able to see this show this Fall MUST check it out. It’s such a powerful story, one that I can only imagine is stunning to watch performed live. You can get your tickets (as low as $20 each) HERE. Even if I’m not able to see this show myself, do yourselves a favor and check it out.
